“Empty plate picnic”
Bryant Park, New York City
6th Ave between 41st and 42nd

21 days of US military spending could solve world hunger for one year

Join in a worldwide nonviolent protest against the installation of a US "Star Wars" base in the Czech Republic. Thousands of people around the globe will be holding a 1-day hunger strike in solidarity with the Czech hunger strikers; those in NY (and supporters) will gather around a symbolic empty plate picnic to re-affirm "real" democracy and discuss ways to transform a military economy into one that meets basic human needs. Sign the online petition at nonviolence.cz.

The event is being co-sponsored by the Humanist Movement, the Campaign for Peace and Democracy, Nuclear Age Peace Foundation/NY, CodePink NYC, Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space, The Center of Cultures and Fellowship of Reconciliation.

The humanist movement was launched in the late 1960s and has now reached more than 100 countries. It has given rise to thousands of projects and initiatives — from neighborhood and cultural groups, to volunteer health clinics and schools, campaigns for disarmament, local and regional Humanist Forums, and Humanist political parties — all guided by the image of building a Universal Human Nation, a world without wars, and based on non-violence, the convergence of diversity, and progress for all human beings.
